Lipoma Removal

Another condition occurring as a natural part of the ageing process, lipoma is the formation of fatty masses which can manifest throughout the body. These can sometimes resemble tumours, which is why diagnosis by an experienced physician is crucial. Although they are generally painless and harmless, lipomas can be embarrassing and unpleasant if they form in prominent locations. You may experience just one, or multiple in various locations.

How Are Lipomas
Removed?

Lipoma removal is considered a minor operation, usually performed as a day procedure under local anaesthesia. Small incisions are made, as inconspicuous as the lipoma’s location will allow, in order to remove the mass. Larger lipomas may require liposuction. Incisions are then closed with small sutures.

How Should I Prepare
For Lipoma Surgery?

Your surgeon will prepare you with detailed post-operative instructions prior. This may include ceasing certain medications and herbal supplements. You will experience some pain, tenderness and discomfort around the area/s for several days, and while you may resume most normal activities right away, it is important to give your body time to recover. You should avoid any vigorous exercise and strenuous activity for around one week following lipoma removal. Diligently follow your surgeon’s aftercare instructions to reduce the risk of infection, bleeding or scarring.

Will My Lipomas
Return?

It is very rare that lipomas will return in the same location. In some instances, they may reoccur if the entirety of the lesion is not removed during the first procedure.
