What Are Breast Implants
Made From?

Breast implants are available in a number of sizes and materials. Saline implants consist of varying amounts of sterile salt water encased in silicone, while silicone implants contain a gel fluid inside the silicone casing. The implants you ultimately choose will be carefully selected during consultation with your surgeon, according to your body and your personal preferences around sizing and firmness. They will be placed either between the breast tissue and the chest muscle, or behind the muscle.

How Do I Prepare For Breast
Augmentation Surgery?

You should be in good physical health prior to surgery, as well as at your ideal weight – as weight gain or loss can impact your breast tissue and size. Your surgeon will advise you regarding any medications that need to be ceased, including herbal supplements such as ginkgo and St John’s Wort. You will be required not to smoke or vape for several weeks prior to your procedure. You may be given antibiotics prior to surgery. We recommend preparing an appropriate recovery room at home including bedding, ice packs and a thermometer, and a loved one should stay with you for 24 hours. You will be given compression garments to wear and must avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting.

What Are The
Risks?

All surgical procedures carry various risks. Scarring is an inevitable aspect of surgery, but your surgeon will provide certain products and instructions in order to minimise this as much as possible. Infection is another possible risk of any surgery, and compliance around aftercare instructions is essential. While many of these may be small, the following are possible risks associated with breast implant surgery:
  • Fluid accumulation around the implant after surgery
  • Allergic reaction to sutures or other medical materials
  • Variation in breast and/or nipple sensation
  • Keloid scarring
  • Capsular contracture (scar tissue formation around the implant)
  • Implant rupture or deflation
  • Calcium deposits around the implant
  • Granulomas (lumps in lymph node tissue formed by leaking silicone)
  • Breastfeeding difficulties
  • Migration of the implants from their original position
  • Risks associated with anaesthesia, such as allergic reaction or cardiovascular complications
  • Deep vein thrombosis
