Also known as abdominoplasty, a surgical tummy tuck is designed to reshape and
contour the abdomen. Many individuals experience loose, sagging skin or even large
folds of excess tissue on the torso after massive weight loss, or post-pregnancy. A
tummy tuck is used to surgically remove this excess skin and restore a flatter, smoother
torso.
How Does Abdominoplasty
Surgery Work?
During weight gain or pregnancy, the skin of the abdomen region is stretched
significantly. After being stretched for a prolonged period, similar to a stretched-out
rubber band, the skin cannot retract to its former tightness and elasticity – even after
pregnancy or once excess weight has been shed. The only way to address significantly
loose skin is therefore a surgical approach, removing the excess skin and closing the
incision with sutures so that when the remaining tissue heals, it is taught and flat.
Tummy tucks can be performed for cosmetic reasons to restore confidence, or for
medical reasons such as repairing abdominal hernia or separation of abdominal
muscles during childbirth (Diastasis Recti). Abdominoplasty is performed under general
anaesthesia, or local anaesthesia and deep sedation.
How Do I Prepare For
Abdominoplasty Surgery?
You should be in good physical health prior to surgery, as well as at your ideal weight –
as weight gain or loss will impact your abdominal area Thorough physical and
psychological evaluation will be conducted prior to any surgical procedures. Your
surgeon will advise you regarding any medications that need to be ceased, including
herbal supplements such as ginkgo and St John’s Wort. You will be required not to
smoke or vape for several weeks prior to your procedure. You may be given antibiotics
prior to surgery. We recommend preparing an appropriate recovery room at home
including bedding, ice packs and a thermometer, and a loved one should stay with you
for 24 hours. You will be given compression garments to wear and must avoid
strenuous activity or heavy lifting. You should expect your torso to be sore, swollen and
bruised for around 2 weeks following your surgery.
