Steroid Injections

Steroidal injections are fast becoming one of the most popular non-surgical methods of scar reduction, in particular keloid scarring. This simple injection into the scar itself can help to reduce its size and appearance without the need for surgical removal, incisions or stitches. They can also be injected pre-surgery to reduce the chances of keloid scar formation.

How Do Steroid Injections Reduce Scars?

Intralesional steroid injections are administered into the keloid or hypertrophic (raised) scar itself, which helps to break up the accumulation of collagen fibres to reduce its raised, lumpy appearance. During pre-surgery use, steroid injections minimise inflammation leading to scarring, which also reduces discomfort associated with incisions such as itching and swelling.

How Soon Will I See Results?

Injections into existing scars may take 2-3 months for full results to be seen. Over this time, the bonds holding clusters of collagen fibres together will be broken up and slowly dispersed. You may require several injections spaced several weeks apart, depending on the size, age, and location of the scar.

Is It Painful?

Generally your scar will be numbed prior to injection, so that you do not find the experience painful. As the steroid injections are anti-inflammatory, it should actually reduce discomfort in the area after the numbing has worn off.
