Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injectable treatments has rapidly become one of the most highly sought-after methods of injectable skin rejuvenation, and can be used to improve the appearance of scars, utilising the power of our bodies to maximise skin health and function.

How Do PRP Injections Work?

PRP treatments harness the plasma component of the patient’s own blood, which contains a high volume of platelets. These platelets play a key role in the body’s healing abilities. PRP is supported by years of scientific research demonstrating its ability to significantly reduce inflammation and optimise cellular repair, aiding in fasting healing of injuries. It also prompts the activation of collagen induction and growth factors. This enhancement of bioactive proteins can improve the skin quality in those suffering acne scars, making it a great standalone option or a great adjunct scar treatment alongside scar subcision.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of PRP treatments vary, depending on factors such as age, skin condition, and desired results. At least three treatments spaced at four weeks apart is recommended for best results, but some candidates will require more depending on the age, depth and severity of the scar/s.

What Can I Expect During Treatment?

Your procedure will start with the extraction of a small volume of blood. This amount is less than that of a typical blood donation. The sample is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the portions of plasma and haemoglobin. Under a topical local anaesthesia, the plasma portion of your blood is then injected back into the skin where it can work its rejuvenation magic.

What Can I Expect Afterwards?

You may be mildly sensitive around the injection sites for several hours. As with any injectable treatment, there is always a risk of bruising and swelling. PRP Therapy results become noticeable after roughly three weeks, as the natural inflammation phase subsides and cell restoration is initiated. Growth factors, hydration and collagen over time leads to an improvement in the skin’s texture, tone, clarity, thickness, and resilience. Scars will improve over the coming months as the tissue quality improves.

Are There Risks Associated With PRP?

As the treatment utilises the patient’s own blood, without the use of any additional products not already found in the body, there is an extremely low chance of intolerance or rejection. Bruising at the injection sites is one of the primary risks, which can occur in any individual irrespective of the injector’s skill or experience.

Who cannot have PRP treatments?

Those suffering skin or autoimmune diseases such as SLE, allergies, porphyria, cancer, severe metabolic, or other systemic disorders, abnormal platelet function, critical thrombocytopenia, haemodynamic instability, those undergoing anticoagulation therapy, or anyone experiencing underlying sepsis cannot undergo Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy.
