How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

During laser hair removal, laser energy is delivered into the skin, where it bypasses the surface and penetrates into the deeper layers where the hair follicles reside. The precise nature of the laser means that the energy is absorbed into the pigment cells within each hair. This damages the follicle and the cells within the hair root, disabling their growth and function.

What Is The Difference Between
IPL & Laser Hair Removal?

IPL, similar to laser, utilises the power of light to treat a multitude of skin concerns, including hair removal. Unlike laser, which utilises one collimated and coherent wavelength of light at a time, IPL delivers a spectrum of light into the tissue. Different wavelengths of light are picked up by a number of targets in the skin – water, pigment, or haemoglobin (red blood cells), making IPL less specific. In laser hair removal, pigment is the only target used. Both IPL and laser can be used to effectively remove unwanted hair, although they are vastly different technologies, with different price points. Laser, being a more specific energy type, may require less sessions to achieve results.

Why Do I Need So Many
Sessions?

You may already know that laser and IPL hair removal requires up to 10-12 sessions for complete and long-lasting hair reduction. This is because each individual hair grows at different stages – growing, resting, and shedding. Once a hair completes its growing phase, it detaches from the root, where it rests for several weeks before being shed and replaced with new growth. For permanent hair reduction, a hair follicle must be targeted with laser or IPL energy while the hair is still growing and attached at the root. Only then will the follicle become inactive. Since every hair grows at staggered rates, many repeated sessions are required to hit each and every follicle during a hair growth phase.

How Do I Prepare For
My Treatment?

We ask that you avoid sun exposure or fake tan, or other clinical treatments for at least 14 days prior to hair removal laser. Do not wax the area or exfoliate within 48 hours of treatment.

What Can I Expect During &
After Treatment?

Your Vectus laser hair removal will be surprisingly quick! Our expert therapists will deliver pulses of energy rapidly across the skin, during which you may feel some warmth and/or a short flicking or snapping sensation. It may be a strange or slightly uncomfortable sensation but is not described as painful. After treatment, your skin will feel warm and may appear pink or red. You should avoid touching the skin, and keep it moisturised with recommended aftercare solutions. Due to sensitivity and disruption of the skin’s barrier for a short time, you should avoid vigorous exercise or hot, steamy environments which may cause excessive sweating, due to risk of bacterial infection. Redness and heat should disappear by the following day, and you may notice your hairs shedding from their follicles in the coming week. Avoid exfoliating for one week, and skip use of highly active or stimulating ingredients like retinoids or AHAs/BHAs for at least 3 days. Be sure to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily following laser treatments.
